Brazil - Irmãs Pereira (2025)

Producer at origin in Carmo de Minas

Fazenda Serrado was established in the early 1970s by Antônio Andrade Pereira Filho and Maria de Conceição Costa Pereira. Their daughters Maria Valéria and Maria Rogéria later inherited the farm, choosing to change the name to Irmãs Pereira, "Pereira Sisters."

The farm has expanded over time to its current size of 250 hectares, about the size of Brooklyn's Prospect Park, of which half is planted with coffee. Elevations range from 1,050 to 1,220 meters, perfectly matched to the latitude. The varieties cultivated here include novo mundo, acaiá, red and yellow catuaí, red and yellow catucaí, and finally red and yellow bourbon.

Like their extended family, the Pereira sisters have been persistent in their pursuit of coffee quality. Some recent measures have included experiments with UV protection during drying and yeast inoculation during processing. They also employ a strict pruning schedule, increasing the farm's productivity while also ensuring its predictability.

Their community of Carmo de Minas is nestled within the Mantiqueira range, otherwise famous for its abundance of naturally occurring springs. Carmo de Minas was once more invested in cattle, but in the 1970s, particularly as coffee production in Brazil shifted northward and away from frost prone areas, its residents became increasingly involved in coffee. A newer generation has ensured the present day success of its coffee, including Luis Paulo Dias Pereira Filho, son of Maria Rogéria and a cofounder of CarmoCoffees, the exporter supplying us with most of our Brazilian coffees.

Under arrangement by our friends at Cafe Imports, this coffee supports CriaCarmo, an after school organization supported by CarmoCoffees to equip school-aged children of Carmo de Minas for professional success through athletic, recreational, and educational programs, including English language lessons.
