Rockaway Cold Brew Pouches (or just Rockaway, as we refer to it internally) joined our lineup in 2021 after our team determined that making cold brew at home was not a fun or easy experience. Traditionally, one must use a specific brewing device like the Hario Cold Brew Bottle or a more involved setup utilizing a paper or cloth filter and a large container for steeping. While unique pieces of gear have their place and we enjoy many of the coffee tools available, managing such cold brewing methods typically requires quite a bit of cleanup.
We don't talk about it enough - and probably should more often - but after a coffee has finished brewing, the used coffee grounds should not be washed down the drain. In the long term, this would be setting yourself up for a plumbing disaster. Unfortunately, most cold brew equipment is not simple to clean and can result in a large portion of spent coffee grounds being washed away during the cleaning process, potentially leading to clogged pipes and costly damages. Our Cold Brew Pouches address this cleaning issue by packing coffee into a nice, easy-to-use pouch. Once brewing is complete, the pouch can be easily disposed of without the need for additional strainers to filter out the used grounds from the brewed cup.
Another element of our inspiration was to offer a more sustainable method of shipping cold brew as compared to ready-to-drink (RTD) can options. One entire bag of Rockaway (4 pouches) brews an equivalent of 14 cans of cold brew and weighs over 10x less. This reduced weight results in significantly fewer emissions during the shipping process!
Once we arrived at the design aspect of this project, we had a few ideas in mind - but ultimately landed on a classic striped pattern, reminiscent of popular beach towel designs (internally referred to as the French Riviera pattern). The name Rockaway (by far the best beach in NYC) then came naturally as an homage to sunny days spent by the ocean.
