Regular price $17.75

In the heart of the famous coffee region Huehuetenango. the town and outlying villages of Todos Santos are home to a very special group of producers. This association, El Esfuerzo ("The Effort"), began with 10 members in 1995, and is today comprised of 55 individual farmers deeply committed to improving their community through coffee production.

This is our third year working with this group, and this year's harvest is extra delicious! Big bold notes of caramel and chocolate, with apple, pear, and a lingering rich nutty finish.

Partners Story

Todos Santos is located in the department of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. This area in the Western Highlands, the northwest of the country abutting the Mexican state of Chiapas, is the highest point of coffee cultivation in the country. At this distance from the equator, this tremendous elevation might be too high and too cold for coffee, except for the series of unique micro-climates present here. Currents of hot air move south from the warm plains of Tehuantepec, and mix with cool air descending from the even higher Sierra de los Cuchumatanes peaks. The resultant conditions provide the perfect temperature patterns: warm in the day and cool at night. This protects the coffee plants from frost and extends the maturation period of the coffee cherries for dense, complex-flavored seeds. Rain falls heavily in well-defined seasons: dry during budding and flowering (lest the developing fruit be knocked off), and wet during ripening. The soil is primarily clay, dense with leafy organic matter, aiding in natural fertilization and good regional biodiversity. These factors together have justly led to Huehue's fame as a source of beautiful coffee.

The municipality of Todos Santos Cuchumatán contains the town itself as well as six smaller villages and dozens of tiny rural communities. In addition to coffee, the area is the heart of agricultural production in the Cuchumateca valley, cultivating crops such as potatoes, broccoli, and the culturally-sacred maize. The population is predominantly indigenous peoples of Mayan descent, the majority of whom still speak the Mam language. Todos Santos is unique in Guatemala as one of the few places where the indigenous men and women still wear their traditional clothing, of distinctive colors, patters, and material. The town is home to an annual festival centered around All Saints Day, with celebrations including traditional dances and music, but known for its famously rowdy horse race

El Esfuerzo ("The Effort") was formed in 1995 by ten individual producers seeking to pool their resources for the betterment of the local coffee-producing community. Since then, they have expanded to more than 50 contributing members, built a warehouse to consolidate and hold their day lots, a quality lab and local commercial roastery, and a health clinic serving the community at large. Partners Coffee was introduced to this group via Josue Morales of Los Volcanes, our exporting partner in Guatemala. While many of our Guatemalan lots are delivered intact in cherry to be processed at his washing station in Antigua, the sheer remoteness of Todos Santos requires that producers here depulp and dry their own coffee down to the parchment stage. His expertise and guidance to El Esfuerzo has improved parchment drying practices, introduced a radical new fertilization program to increase nutrition and water retention (which also helps prevent erosion on the tiered plots), and expanded the diversity of cultivars planted to include those with elevated yields, higher quality, and improved disease resistance.
